I have been loving this series with each successive book that comes out, and Eric and Calvin's story is no different! Defining Us packs a powerful emotion punch that it is a bit different from the preceding books in my opinion and made for a page turning read I couldn't put down.Calvin (aka Mouse) has been through a hellish nightmare in his past that is just beyond words. The things that were inflicted on him at the hands of a family member were unspeakable and it is no wonder that he is a complete emotional and physical mess at this point in his life.
Eric (aka Peacock) is his best friend and the man he has loved from afar for years. Despite the fact that they love each other and want to be together, Calvin's past makes that a near impossibility. For the first 20% of the book, he is warring with himself and everyone around him as he tries to pluck up the courage to explain to Eric exactly what happened him in the past and why he things that they can't be together.
Eric is rightfully shocked by what he hears, but he is determined to help Calvin find a way to move on with his life no matter whether they end up together in the end (although that is definitely his preference). From that point forward, it is a roller coaster of emotions with one step forward and one step back, but they start to make progress in baby steps. It is a painful journey as they face down society's expectations and years of ingrained beliefs and fears, but there is plenty of love and laughter to offset the high emotions as well. The rest of the band is there to support them as much as possible too once the guys make the decision to let them in on a little bit of what Calvin is dealing with.
I am going to miss this wild and crazy crew, and Defining Us is a wonderful conclusion to the band members' stories. I don't want to give away too much of the story but if you enjoy a great m/m romance, definitely consider grabbing a copy of Calvin and Eric's story- then strap in for one heckuva ride!

This book knocked my emotions all over the place!!! I cried (and I mean UGLY cried), I laughed, I swooned, and I got really angry – how does anyone quantify inhumane and cruel treatment of any human being is beyond what my mind can comprehend. But then, this is a story about 2 men who have so many emotions between them and within themselves that breaking through their boundaries was essential to the story. I was a basket-case most of the day – but in the end – what a wonderful journey these 2 amazing characters traveled. I’ve read M/M before, but this is by far the best. Of course it’s a Zoey Derrick book, so you know the sex will be off the charts, but in the end, that’s one small piece of the whole story. The true meaning behind the book is one of love, patience, honesty, openness, honor and learning to trust your heart with someone who is meant to be “Your One”.
I read so many books, that sometimes it’s hard for me to ‘get lost’ in the story – you know, when you’re right there, in the same place as the characters – it’s almost like you feel their emotions…..as if they’re your own???? Cal and Eric took me with them on their ride and I sincerely loved it! I’m typing this and tearing up – so yeah, Zoey ‘took me’ with them!!! I rode the roller coaster of highs and lows with Eric and Calvin (Mouse and Peacock), with an ending that just took my breath away. Just awesome! Thank you!!
So, now to try and get my heart to relax and my mind to unwind!!! So extremely well done Zoey! She is truly an amazing talent and every book she writes, she shares her ‘heart’ and ‘gift’ with us………..God truly blessed her……..”He’s claimed me. He craves me. He is redeeming me, taming me, and devouring me. He’s redefined me. Now it’s time to love him the way he deserves to be loved. Wholly and unconditionally.”
I am going to miss the band 69 Bottles, but I hope they will drop in on us from time to time and let us in on their lives.
I set the Heat Level and Rating for this site, but I wish I would have had the forethought to make exceptions to the rules! If so, Zoey would definitely have a Rating of 10 and a Heat Level of at least an 8!!!
Now I am a big fan of Zoey Derrick and the 69 Bottles series. Ive loved it since I read the first one. This story will just break your heart when you read it while at the same time inspire you to go after what you want in life and love.
Calvin aka Mouse and Eric aka Peacock are two very opposite characters that have been best friends for years.That is until Eric comes out of the closet and Calvins feelings for him start to come out and start unraveling into something you can never even fathom about him.
Eric has spent a decade in love with Calvin always thinking he wasnt into guys like he is, boy oh boy is he wrong.
Calvin's story amazes me and makes me cry at the same time.
Eric is one of those ppl that just wants to take all the pain of what hes gone through away and fix it and he struggles so much with what he puts Calvin through. I just love eric so much a sweetie.
This is a must read if you are a fan of Zoey Derricks books or if you love any of the 69 bottles books. Its different because it is guy on guy and thats not what alot of ppl want to read. But its sexy as hell as so worth the read for sure.
